DepEd announces Palarong Pambansa 2020 suspension and among its other activities.

PALARONG PAMBANSA 2020 – The Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Tuesday that Palarong Pambansa is suspended.

Just recently, it has been reported that the opening of classes for this year will be on August 24, 2020, because of the outbreak of COVID-19 in the Philippines as per Department of Education (DepEd). It was last March since all classes of the entire country got suspended.

And now, the annual inter-school sports tournament Palarong Pambansa for this year, is also hereby suspended. This is along with other usual activities that gather large crowd.

The suspension is in accordance to the guidelines of enhanced community quarantine which include social distancing and prohibition of social gatherings. Education Secretary Leonor Briones said through a virtual press briefing as per ABS-CBN report, “‘Yong ating usual activities na napaka-exciting, nakakatuwa, na lahat, buong bansa nakikisali talaga, national events ay pansamantalang kina-cancel natin.”

Other activities which also got suspended were talent contests, science and job fairs, and campus journalism events. Meanwhile, among other local sports events suspended for this year due to COVID-19 include FIBA, PBA, UAAP, NCAA, PFL, ABL, MPBL, NBTC, PSL, RUGBY, and many more.

The Palarong Pambansa event is a yearly multi-sport event joined by student-athletes coming from 17 regions of the country which is organized and governed by the Department of Education. One of the integral objective of this school sports event is to promote physical education to the youth for their holistic development.

In the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) issued update about coronavirus in the Philippines and they have already recorded 9,485 total confirmed cases, 623 deaths, and 1,315 recoveries as of May 4, 4 P.M. update.
