Lacson Says Senate Expected To Summon Duque To Address Actions During COVID-19 Crisis
SENATE TO SUMMON DUQUE – Senators have demanded that Health Secretary Francisco Duque III answer for his actions or lack thereof during the COVID-19 crisis.
Duque was heavily criticized by Senators and the public for his lack of initiative during the early stages of COVID-19.
Recently, the Senators also filed a resolution calling for the resignation of Duque. However, President Rodrigo Duterte quickly stepped in and announced that Duque would not be going anywhere at this point.
Duque and his department were also criticized because of allegations from veteran journalist Arnold Clavio. The journalist revealed messages of insider frontliners that said they were ordered to not count deaths due to COVID-19.
Furthermore, Senator Panfilo Lacson on Friday said that the Senate is expected to call on Duque for a probing. Lacson stated that the Senate wanted Duque to explain his alleged “failure in leadership” during the coronavirus pandemic.
According to a report from ABS-CBN, Lacson also cited Duque’s alleged inadequacies in containing the virus. Additionally, Lacson made this statement:
Not only will it give Sec. Duque the opportunity to explain his side, it will also give all other resource persons in the medical community and whoever may be invited to shed light to further articulate their views with the end in view of passing relevant legislation on our part
However, Lacson also emphasized that at the end of the day, the public would still be enlightened after the open discussion with Duque.
Meanwhile, the resolution against the Health Secretary is expected to be addressed once Congress resumes their session on May 4, 2020.
