The genus Jasminum is derived from the Persian term Yasameen or “gift from God”, and is a genus of shrubs and vines of the Olive family.

The species sambac, on the other hand, os derived from the medieval Latin term “sambacus” and “zambacca”, which is derived from the medieval Arabic term “zanbaq” which denotes jasmine flower-oil from the flowers of any species of jasmine.
