Amid Extended Quarantine, DOLE Urges Employers To Continue Paying Workers
DOLE TO EMPLOYERS – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) pleaded to employers to continue paying their workers in Quarantine.
Recently, President Rodrigo Duterte had extended the coroanvirus quarantine until April 30. As such, more workers continued to struggle with finding a source of income amid the quarantine.
This led to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III to appeal to employers and big businesses to continue giving their workers pay. According to an article from COSMO PH, Bello stated:
I once again knock in the kind hearts of our employers, especially the conglomerates and big businesses. Please extend further your generosity to your employees and workers. Your good-heartedness and compassion is a great help to the government.
Furthermore, DOLE revealed that over a million employees within the formal sector were out of a job due to the effects of COVID-19. Additionally, 250 million workers in the informal sector needed assistance under the “TUPAD-BKBK” program.
The Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Displaced/Disadvantaged Workers Program – Barangay Ko, Bahay Ko (TUPAD-BKBK) aims to assist those workers in need – especially during this public health crisis.
Meanwhile. as per the report, most of the displaced workers were identified to be in Metro Manila. Moreover, the number of displaced workers was estimate at around 246,810.
In Central Luzon, an estimated 179,875 workers have temporarily lost their jobs. Furthermore, the majority of the workers affected come from the manufacturing, hotel, restaurant, tourism, and education industries.
DOLE had already given assistance to about 180,000 workers with over P900 million spent. Additionally, with their budget of P1.61 billion, they would be able to assist 322,000 more workers.
