Military Forces in Italy To Help Enforce Lockdown Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

Government Seeks Aid of Military Forces in Italy Over Fight Against Coronavirus

MILITARY FORCES IN ITALY – The coronavirus deaths in Italy continue to increase which prompted the government to ask the help of the military in implementing the lockdown.

Italy is one of the countries hit hard by the 2019 novel coronavirus, officially called as COVID-19. In fact, Italy is under a lockdown now due to the increasing cases of coronavirus in the country.

Giuseppe Conte, the prime minister of Italy, initially announced the lockdown in the region of Lombardy. It is the epicenter of coronavirus in the country. Fourteen (14) provinces in Italy were also covered by the partial lockdown.

However, the partial lockdown was not able to show improvements in the fight of Italy against the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus. Infected cases and deaths continued to increase.

Shortly after announcing a partial lockdown, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte extended his orders. He announced a total lockdown in the whole country.

Conte also asked the owners and operators of non-essential businesses to suspend operation. Only those essential businesses like food stores are allowed to open under the lockdown.

Sadly, Italy is still on a tough fight against coronavirus now. Recently, it recorded 627 deaths due to COVID-19 in just 24 hours. It is now the country with the highest coronavirus death toll with over 4,000 deaths.

Based on a report on CNN, the help of the military forces in Italy was asked by the government in enforcing the lockdown. The hospitals in Lombardy now are struggling in the treatment of thousands of patients.

According to the region’s president, Attilio Fontana, 114 soldiers will be deployed throughout Lombardy. Based on the report, the number of military is still small but they are positive that it can help ease the crisis.

Even the Chinese experts who are helping the Italian nation deal with the coronavirus crisis said that the restrictions imposed are not enough. Now, the 114 soldiers are expected to ensure general security outdoors.
