GMA Network Franchise Renewed Before Expiry, Here’s Statement

GMA network granted of 25-year renewed franchise prior its expiry date.

GMA NETWORK – The GMA network released statement regarding the franchise renewal granted to them which will last for 25 years.

Amid the battle of ABS-CBN facing controversies amid their franchise renewal as they are bound to expire this May 2020, GMA network, on their part, have broken their silence dismissing speculations that they operated even after expiry. The network clarified that President Rodrigo Duterte renewed the 25-year franchise last April 2017. To recall, they were set to end in May 2017.

Moreover, the statement further read as per the report from PEP:

“On April 21, 2017 – 22 days prior to the expiry of the original franchise – President Rodrigo Duterte signed Republic Act No. 10925 or “An Act Renewing For Another Twenty-Five (25) Years The Franchise Granted To Republic Broadcasting System, Inc., Presently Known As GMA Network, Inc., Amending For The Purpose Republic Act No. 7252, Entitled An Act Granting The Republic Broadcasting System, Inc. a Franchise to Construct, Install, Operate and Maintain Radio and Television Broadcasting Stations in the Philippines.”

Thus, ending rumors about the network still operating despite the said expiry for the president have granted them the renewal weeks before of their expiry date. It was renewed earlier.

Meanwhile, on first hearing of the Kapamilya network regarding their franchise renewal, ABS-CBN Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer Carlo Katigbak apologized to the president over the unpaid ads. This rooted the wrath of the president threatening to block the renewal of the issue.

In the end, the president accepted the public apology and the network was humbled by the response of the president. Also, the remaining fund over the unpaid political ads will be sent to charities as ordered by Duterte.
