Figures of speech also known as figurative language, are known as ways we use to add spice to our writing. It is composed of a regular statement or sentence, then spices it up.

Here we will know these figures that are known as the sounds of language. These are alliteration, rhyme, rhythm, and onomatopoeia.

  • Alliteration
    • This refers to the repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning of words. Examples include:
      • Can you keep the cat from clawing the couch? It’s creating chaos.
      • Quincy’s quilters quit quilting quickly.
      • Hannah’s home has heat now, hopefully.
  • Rhyme
    • Refers to the poetic technique which repeats syllable sounds at the end of lines, especially in poetry stanza. Examples include:
      • Red sky at night,
        sailor’s delight.
        Red sky in morning,
        sailor’s warning.
      • Once upon a midnight dreary,
        while I pondered, weak and weary
  • Rhythm
    • Refers to the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a sentence, a paragraph, or a line in poetry.
  • Onomatopoeia
    • This refers to the use of words to imitate sounds. Examples include:
      • Impact sounds such as boom, crash, whack, thump, bang
      • Nature sounds such as splash, drip, spray, whoosh, buzz, rustle
