Rocket Debris Washes Ashore in Cagayan as Authorities Launch Investigation
ROCKET DEBRIS – A suspected piece of rocket debris found in Cagayan has caught public attention as government agencies continue to determine its true origin.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has recovered an object believed to be rocket debris along the shoreline of Barangay Babuyan Claro in Calayan, Cagayan, as authorities continue efforts to determine its origin and nature.
According to a report released by the PCG on Friday, August 7, the object was recovered on Thursday, August 6, after the agency received information at around 12:30 p.m. from a concerned resident. The resident reported discovering what appeared to be part of a rocket washed ashore along the coastal area.
Following the report, PCG personnel immediately responded to inspect the object. However, according to PCG Spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab, there were no visible markings or identifiers that could conclusively confirm that the recovered object was indeed rocket debris.
“They secured the object in a safe location while awaiting further technical assessment by the appropriate authorities,” said Cayabyab in her statement.
She also urged the public, particularly those living in coastal communities, to exercise caution whenever they encounter unidentified objects floating at sea or washed up on shore.
“We also advise fisherfolk and coastal residents to avoid handling unidentified floating objects and to immediately report similar sightings to the nearest local authorities,” she added.
The PCG said it is coordinating with the appropriate government agencies to establish the object’s origin and identify exactly what was recovered from the coastline.
“The PCG continues to coordinate with concerned government agencies to determine the origin and nature of the recovered object, in support of maritime safety under President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr’s Bagong Pilipinas vision, the Intensified Community Assistance, Awareness, Response, and Enforcement (iCARE) campaign and the Organized National Engagement (ONE) at Sea strategic concept,” the PCG said.
The discovery comes just days after the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) issued an advisory on Wednesday, August 5, confirming the launch of the Jielong-3 rocket by the People’s Republic of China.
“Expected debris from the rocket launch was projected to have fallen within the identified drop zone (DZ): approximately 94 NM away from Babuyan Island, and 143 NM away from Santa Ana, Cagayan. This drop zone is within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ),” PhilSA stated in its advisory.
Despite the timing of the discovery, authorities have not confirmed whether the recovered object in Cagayan is connected to the Jielong-3 rocket launch. Investigations and technical assessments remain ongoing to determine the object’s identity and whether it is related to any recent space launch activity.
