VISAYAN MYTHS – In this topic, we will now know some of the examples of Visayan myths or myths and folklore from the island group of Visayas.
Visayas is the smallest and the centermost island group in the Philippines and is divided into three regions: Western, Central, and Eastern.
Like its other two island groups, it is also filled with myths and folklore and what’s more, they even have their own pantheon of gods and goddesses.
Here are the following myths and folklore, according to The Aswang Project:
- Bakunawa and the Seven Moons
- It is said that Bathala created seven moons that illuminated one night of the week. These were regarded as the Queens of the night.
- The bakunawa is a huge serpent that coiled aronud the world and was said to be the reason why there is only one moon left as it swallowed the six other moons.
- The Legend of Kanlaon
- There are two legends about the mountain Kanlaon in the Island of Negros. One of which is about the hero of the same name who defeated the dragon with seven heads with green eyes.
- The other was about a king named Laon, who, along with his servants, built the said mountain
- Visayan Pantheon – Gods and Goddesses of Visayas
- Like the Olympian deities in Greece, Visayas has its own set of deities that are divided into three: Kahilwayan or sky, Kamaritan or earth, and Kasakitan or underworld. Each have their principal deities:
- Kahilwayan – Kaptan, the god of the skyworld
- Kamaritaan – Sidapa, the death goddess and Makaptan, the god of sickness
- Kasakitan – Sumpoy, ruler of the underworld
