DUTERTE DEFENDS CAULDRON – As the SEA games draw near, the government has been flamed for the P55 Million cauldron other deem as an unnecessary extravagance.

However, President Rodrigo Duterte did not agree with that statement. Instead, he justified that the cauldron was expensive because it was a work of art.

Along with this, Duterte also addressed the allegations that there was corruption involved. According to him, there could never be corruption because a national artist was commissioned.

He added that you cannot estimate the cost because it is a rendition of the creator. “Si Mañosa was commissioned by the government to create ‘yung nakita mo ‘yung kaldero ngayon. It is the product of the mind“, said Duterte.

Along with this, the President also said that the government cannot do anything about the price. He explained that if that was the price the artist asked then they wouldn’t have a choice.

Likewise, House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano also justified the price of the cauldron. This was following Senate Minority leader Franklin Drilon describing it as an “unnecessary expense”.

Based on an article from ABS-CBN, Cayetano said that the country’s cauldron was cheaper than Singapore’s. He explained that the price for Singapore was P62 million.

According to Cayetano, the cauldron itself caused P7 million. However, it needed a P18 million mechanism to keep the flames going for 264 straight days.

The Cauldron was designed by National Artist for Architecture Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa.
