Steelmakers Connected To BuCor Corruption Faces Charges

BUREAU OF CORRECTIONS (BuCor) – Steelmakers who are discovered to have conspired with BuCor in smuggling of steel to dodge taxes will be charged.

According to Manila Times, Dante Jimenez the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) head stated that President Duterte gave them a directive. This was to investigate steel manufacturers and Customs officials.

Jimenez stated that the steel manufacturers will be asked to explain. Afterwards he added that they could be sanctioned or face charges.

He then said that whether you are working in the government or private sector it doesn’t matter. Jimenez then stated that if you violated the law, that would be the protocol.

The report by Manila Times stated that the officials of the Department of Trade and Industry were also suspects. They were supposedly colluding with big steel makers in allowing entry of substandard steel.

This causes the government to lose billions of pesos is taxes and duties. In lieu of this, Lito Atienza, Buhay party-list Rep, urged the government to increase efforts against smuggling.

He then spotlighted reports that showed as much as P200 billion is lost yearly due to smuggling. Atienza then added that smuggling of steel should be looked into closely.

Atienza then emphasized the need of implementing Customs Modernization and Traffic Act. This would strengthen the pre-inspection of container vans.

He then added that the containers vans must be cleared from the port of origin before it is shipped. Afterwards he cited that when Duterte took office, they expected that the act would be implemented.

However, until not nothing has changed, Atienza added. He then stated that the Department of Finance (DoF) is not intent on its implementation.
