Suspected Female Suicide Bomber Hits Military Detachment in Sulu

INDANAN, SULU – A Philippine Army detachment in Indanan, Sulu was targeted by another suicide bombing, this time by a suspected woman.

The suspected woman was killed when the bomb she was carrying on her body exploded right at the gates of the Philippine Army in Sulu. The bomber wore an abaya, a full-length outer garment worn by some Muslim women.

At about 5:48 pm on Sunday, the suicide bomber tried to enter the military detachment where the Philippine Army’s 35th Infantry Battalion was stationed. This was according to spokesman of the Sulu Joint Task Force, Lt. Col. Gerard Monfort.

The officers manning the entrance were suspicious because of the bomber’s unnaturally big stomach. They prevented the attacker from entering the detachment, and moments later, the bombs went off.

According to an article by CNN, Lt. Col. Gerard Monfort stated that no soldiers were harmed during the explosion. Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Western Mindanao’s commander added that the suspect could possibly be a foreigner.

Sobejana said that the authorities found the bombers head. However based on the other body parts, Sobejana could not confirm the gender of the bomber due to the recovered hand appearing more masculine.

The Lt. General then added that the trigger mechanism of the bomb was recovered. He also stated that the Scene of the Crime Operatives is having an on going investigation.

The Abu Sayyaff were suspected as the group who could have been behind the attack. On June 28 of this year, there was also a bombing in Indana.

It was the first suicide bombing executed by a Filipino, Norman Lasuca. Eight people died in the bombing which included the two suspects.

The Jolo twin explosions in January at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel was also suspected to be due to a suicide bombing. Authorities stated that the people behind the bombing were an Indonesian couple.
