COMPLEX SENTENCE – Here are the meaning and examples of this sentence structure.

Aside from the kinds of sentences in English, there are also what we call the “sentence structure”. There are four(4) sentence structures taught under the English subject in elementary and secondary years.

The four(4) sentence structures are the simple sentence, the compound sentence, the complex sentence, and the compound-complex sentence.

In this article, we will discuss about the third sentence structure in English.

Complex Sentence

The complex sentence is made up one of one(1) independent clause and at least one(1) dependent clause. The former is a clause that can stand alone in a sentence while the latter is the opposite.

Examples:

  • Cherry was cooking the hotdog until the pizza arrived.
    • Independent Clause – Cherry was cooking the hotdog
    • Dependent Clause – until the pizza arrived
  • If it will not rain, I will go to the party with Simon.
    • Independent Clause – I will go to the party with Simon
    • Dependent Clause – If it will not rain
  • Sharon did not raise her hand until she heard him.
    • Independent Clause – Sharon did not raise her hand
    • Dependent Clause – until she heard him
  • The firemen did not enter the house until the third alarm.
    • Independent Clause – The firemen did not enter the house
    • Dependent Clause – until the third alarm
  • If Diego will arrive early, we will be there by 5:00 pm.
    • Independent Clause – We will be there by 5:00 pm
    • Dependent Clause – If Diego will arrive early
