The rise to popularity of ride hailing apps have been quick lately because of the developments in technology and the fact that mobile data rates are lower and internet connectivity is now easier to get.

Other than the convenient ride offers, companies like Grab also give away huge discounts and promos that people could enjoy.

On the bad side, however, some people are scared of taking these rides because of several reports of bad incidents happening inside the vehicles.

Safety should be prioritized by both the driver and the passenger when booking for a ride.

To ensure your safety, here are a few tips you could consider when using ride hailing apps:

CHECK FOR CHILDLOCK

A Brooklyn-based writer recently went viral after she tweeted about a conversation she had with a Lyft driver after she book a ride and went ahead with her personal safety check. According to her post, the conversation went like:

“Me to @lyft (Lyft) Driver: For Tiffany?
Him: Yup Me: Where are we going?
Him: [redacted] Me: *open & closes car door twice*
Him: *looks back at me* Were you…just checking for a child lock?
Me: Yup.
Him: Whoa. That’s smart. Gonna tell my sister to do that!
Me: *Gives 5 stars*”

SIT IN THE BACK SEAT WHEN TRAVELLING ALONE

This is to keep a distance from the driver to maintain the safety during the ride. If the driver tried to do something suspicious you would have enough distance from him/her to leave or get off the vehicle.

SHARE INFORMATION ABOUT THE RIDE WITH YOUR FRIENDS

Let people know where you are and where you’re going. Share your ride information with your friends so they can track your location and find you if things went off the rails.

CALL YOUR FRIENDS OR FAMILY WHEN IN A RIDE

Keep a call with your friend or family during the ride to act as a virtual passenger. When something happens, they would know immediately.
