Dead Oarfish Found in Coastal Area of New Washington, Aklan

A deep-sea creature called Oarfish has been found dead by the local residents in the coastal area of New Washington, Aklan.

On Monday (July 8, 2019), the Facebook page “GMA News” reported that the residents of New Washington, Aklan found an oarfish along the shoreline.

The Youscooper identified as Rizza Magbiro-Alcedo said that the sea creature is already weak when the locals found it.


Alcedo narrated that the oarfish eventually died a few moments after it was discovered.

Rizza said that it was the first that a deep-sea creature such an oarfish has been found in the area.

The personnel from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) arrived to conduct an investigation regarding the incident.


Over the past few years, the appearance of oarfish in shallow waters has been linked to natural calamities such as earthquakes and tsunami.

The late Japanese seismologist Kiyoshi Wadatsumi also explained that deep-sea creatures have the ability to detect irregularities in the sea bed.
