Otso Diretso Vs. PDP-Laban On Senatorial Race for Election 2019
ELECTION 2019 – The senatorial teams “Otso Diretso” and the “Philippine Democratic Party–People’s Power” or PDP-Laban are on a tight senatorial race for the upcoming bid.
For the upcoming election which will be held on May 13, just nine(9) days from now, both local and national elections would be held. In the former, there will be elections for the positions of governor, vice governor, mayor, vice mayor, and city or municipality councilors.
With regards to the national elections, the Filipino populace may vote on candidates for the seats in the House of Senate and the House of Representative. There is also an election for party-list members.
Among the positions which have a huge number of candidates for Election 2019 are the senatorial seats. There are 62 candidates vying for a seat in the Senate.
Undeniably, among the popular groups of senatorial candidates in the upcoming Election 2019 are the Otso Diretso and the PDP-Laban. Both are on for a tight senatorial race in the midterm poll.
Otso Diretso
The “Otso Diretso” which is a slate formed by the opposition is composed of the following candidates:
- Election Lawyer Romulo Macalintal
- Former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay
- Former House Deputy Speaker Erin Tañada
- Former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas
- Sen. Bam Aquino
- Marawi Civic Leader Samira Gutoc
The talks about the formation of an opposition senatorial slate composed of eight(8) candidates have started even as early as 2018. It was Liberal Party President Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan who shared about their plan.
Visibly, the Otso Diretso is on the mark of making people look into the qualification of the candidates whom they will give their votes to. Previously, they have even challenged a debate against their fellow senatorial aspirants.
“We should raise the standards of applying for public office. Aplikante kami ng mga tao,” Civic leader Samira Gutoc has expressed based on a report on GMA News.
Furthermore, Sen. Pangilinan has also previously expressed that the members of the slate were chosen for their qualifications and there is a need for public awareness about it.
“Hindi naman matatawaran ang kanilang kakayahan. Kailangan lang sila makilala ng ating mga kababayan,” the LP President said.
The Otso Diretso bets really took a double time to reach more people. Based on an ABS-CBN News report, their campaign has started by knocking on doors and shaking hands with bystanders in Caloocan.
Sen. Pangilinan has already previously expressed that most of the campaign of the Otso Diretso team for the Election 2019 would really be in touch with the public. Meanwhile, their online presence is maintained as well.

PDP-Laban
Another prominent senatorial party in the upcoming Election 2019 is the PDP-Laban – the party where President Rodrigo Roa Duterte belongs. The following are the senatorial candidates under the said party:
- Maguindanao Representative Zajid Mangudadatu
- Former PNP Chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa
- Former Presidential Aide Christopher “Bong” Go
- Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel
- Former Political Affairs Adviser Francis Tolentino
The five(5) aforementioned senatorial candidates are greatly endorsed by Pres. Duterte. But aside from them, the President also endorses Sens. JV Ejercito and Cynthia Villar, Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos, singer Freddie Aguilar, and Taguig City Rep. Pia Cayetano.
Undeniably, the fact that Pres. Duterte endorses the aforementioned candidates can greatly affect the popularity of the senatorial aspirants. He has always praised them for being hard working and people with integrity.
Like the Otso Diretso and the other senatorial aspirants, the members of the PDP-Laban also reach out to the public campaigning in the different cities and municipalities.
For several times, the President was present to endorse the PDP-Laban candidates to the public and make known of how he knows them. Just like for former PNP Chief Bato dela Rosa, he expressed that the police officer is “fundamentally honest” based on a report on PhilStar.
For former Political Affairs Adviser Francis Tolentino, Pres. Duterte told the public that he never got engaged in irregularities. A Goliath is undeniably behind the PDP-Laban assuring the people of their qualifications and good work.
