DOH Warns Holy Week Activities’ Participants Against Summer Diseases

SUMMER DISEASES – The Department of Health advises the public to be aware of summer diseases that may be prevalent this coming Holy Week.

In the past few months, the Department of Health released several announcements warning the public against diseases that may come with summer heat.

It is already expected that there would be huge crowds of people in public places especially pilgrimage sites this coming Holy Week. Here are six health tips to avoid heatstroke.

Meanwhile, Department of Health Regional Director Minerva Molon, ensured that health workers are already prepared for possible emergencies. But the public should consider extra caution when going out to participate in Holy Week activities.

Minerva Molon reminded the public to stay safe and briefly gave a simple tip in here statement:

“Always bring bottled water to keep yourself hydrated, ensure that foods are well-packed so it won’t easily be spoiled, and use an umbrella if you are exposed to sunlight. Simple practices can avoid diseases common during the hot season.”

DOH also warned against bringing infants and small children to massively crowded spots as they might catch diseases due to their lower resistance against infections compared to older people.

She warned against summer diseases including: sore eyes, colds, coughs and skin diseases.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA on the other hand, advises the public to stay under shade or preferably indoors during midday during this season because the heat index in five provinces are soaring high.

As of April 15, these are the recorded heat indexes according to PAG-ASA:

  • 38.5 in Catbalogan City, Samar,
  • 38.5 in Borongan City, Eastern Samar,
  • 38.6 in Catarman, Northern Samar,
  • 40.5 in Maasin City, Southern Leyte and,
  • 34.9 in Tacloban City, Leyte.
