TENSES OF VERB – Here is a discussion on the three(3) basic tenses of verb and their examples.

One of the parts of speech in English is the Verb. The other parts include the noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, conjunction, preposition, and interjection. Each has a specific purpose.

In this article, we will discuss about the verb. It is the part of speech in English that conveys an action or what the subject in the sentence is doing. It is also called as ‘action word’.

Some of the examples of verb includes sit, run, shake, jump, throw, speak, drink, fasten, move, seal, eat, sing, etc.

Now, we will focus on the three(3) basic tenses of verb – the past tense, the present tense, and the future tense.

Tenses of Verb

The tenses of verb show whether the action was already done, is being done, or will be done in the future.

PAST TENSE – Under this tense, the action was already done by the doer.

Examples:

  • sat
  • ate
  • threw
  • flew
  • jumped

Sample Sentences:

  1. Jeric sat on the floor.
  2. The doctor ate the delicious food.
  3. Martin threw the garbage outside the house.

PRESENT TENSE – The verb is in the present tense if it is currently done by the doer of the action or the subject. It usually ends in “-ing”.

Examples:

  • sitting
  • eating
  • throwing
  • flying
  • jumping

Sample Sentences:

  1. Jeric is sitting on the floor.
  2. The doctor is eating the delicious food.
  3. Martin is throwing the garbage outside the house.

FUTURE TENSE – The verb is in the future tense if the action is not yet done but will be done in the future. It is often accompanied by “will” or “shall”.

Examples:

  • will sit
  • shall eat
  • will throw
  • shall fly
  • will jump

Sample Sentences:

  1. Jeric will sit on the floor.
  2. The doctor shall eat the delicious food.
  3. Martin will throw the garbage outside the house.
