Definition of Demonstrative Pronoun & Its Examples

DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUN – Here is the definition of ‘Demonstrative Pronoun’ and as well as some examples and sample sentences.

Pronoun is one of the eight(8) parts of speech in English. It is among the commonly used parts of speech aside from noun. Usually, these two really go hand-in-hand in paragraphs.

Pronouns are used to replaced the nouns or names of person, places, things, etc. in the sentence to avoid repetition. This part of speech come with many types or kinds.

Aside from the Indefinite Pronoun, another type of pronouns is the Demonstrative Pronoun and that is what we will discuss in this article.

Demonstrative Pronoun

Based on Grammar, Demonstrative Pronoun are pronouns that replace the nouns in a sentence with an indication of its proximity to the speaker. There are four(4) examples of this type of pronoun – This, That, These, and Those.

Examples and Sample Sentences Using Demonstrative Pronouns

THIS – This pronoun is used to indicate a singular noun that is close to the speaker.

  • This is my favorite shirt.
  • This is the gift that Pedro sent to you.
  • This chair is broken so put it on the side.

THAT – This pronoun is used to indicate a singular noun that is far from the speaker.

  • That apple was given by Josie to Mier.
  • That car is owned by a doctor.
  • That pail should be filled with water before I get home.

THESE – This pronoun is used to indicate plural nouns that are close to the speaker.

  • These marbles were given to me by the kid.
  • These pancakes were cooked for you.
  • These are the prizes I got from the birthday party.

THOSE – This pronoun is used to indicate plural nouns that are far from the speaker.

  • Those beautiful flowers are quite expensive.
  • Those photos were taken during our Baguio vacation.
  • Those notebooks will be distributed tomorrow.
