Pres. Duterte Requests Congress for Martial Law Extension in Mindanao

MARTIAL LAW EXTENSION MINDANAO – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte requested the Congress for the extension of the Martial Law in Mindanao.

In 2017, Marawi in Mindanao was attacked and it left many Filipino families homeless. The incident which took months to be resolved also cost several lives including those of the Filipino soldiers sent there.

Following the attack to Marawi, in May, Pres. Duterte has declared Martial Law in Mindanao for the safety of the people there. It means an arrest without warrant is possible for those who are suspected committers of violations.

The said declaration was already extended twice and it is set to expire on December 31, 2018 according to GMA News.

Previously, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III expressed that Pres. Rodrigo Duterte might call for a joint session of the Congress to discuss the Martial Law declaration in Mindanao. The President wanted it to be extended.

Recently, reporter Joseph Morong expressed in a post that Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdia confirmed that the President has requested the Congress for the extension.

Based on the report, both the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the military have suggested for its extension in Mindanao.

As of this writing, there are still no further details regarding the request of the President to the Congress. We’ll keep you posted for updates about it.
