El Nido Mayor Lambasted By Tourism Secretary Puyat For Showing Off

Department Of Tourism Secretary Puyat Lambasts Mayor Of El Nido For Showing Off And Inconsistency Of Policy Implementation

EL NIDO – Department of Tourism secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat harshly criticised the mayor of El Nido for inconsistency of implementing policies.

A government official previously revealed that an interagency body is set to undertake a massive cleanup on the island resort town of El Nido in Palawan. Environment Undersecretary Benny Antiporda recently said that high government officials agreed to launch the rehabilitation amidst the worsening problems of garbage and unregulated construction of structures there.

Earlier this week, Sec. Berna Romulo-Puyat of the Department of Tourism, along with two other Cabinet officials, came to check the island’s environmental issues and compliance with policies and met the island’s mayor Nieves Rosendo.

Puyat ordered Rosendo to move the boats from the beachfront as it increases fecal coliform. However, when Puyat checked the beachfront, nothing happened. Two bodies of water  located in the town had failed water safety tests due to high levels of fecal coliform.

An article in ABS-CBN News states that Puyat expressed that they were impressed at what Rosendo showed but was saddened when they left as Rosendo simply showed the good parts.

Puyat further added that the mayor was simply showing off and she did not like the fact that the mayor implemented change when Puyat was there, only to bring it back afterwards.

As per the report, Rosendo, on the other hand, said the local government has yet to find a permanent dock for boats. Boat tours to lagoons and beach islands jump off from a beach front at the center of town. Rosendo further added that they have 200 beaches but were in other islands. El Nido has 4 beaches yet they don’t have a backdoor as they are all beach fronts.

Rosendo said that the local government is currently crafting orders to regulate the docking of boats and to establish common cooking areas for tourists.

The national government, however, is willing to give Rosendo a chance, as said by Puyat.
