Wage Hike Of ₱25 Is Too Small, Says Labor Group

Biggest Labor Group Slammed Wage Hike, Saying It’s “Plucked In The Air”

WAGE HIKE – The biggest labor group in the Phillipines were dismayed on the ₱25 wage hike as they find it insufficient and unfair.

The NCR Regional Board recently approved the salary increase in Metro Manila. This was confirmed by the Department of Labor and Employment. The new minimum wage rate is now ₱500 to ₱537.

However, not all will agree to the said wage increase. The Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) is the biggest labor group of this country and they do not agree on the increase as they find it inadequate and was “plucked from the air” considering the effects of TRAIN law.

ALU-TUCP spokesperson Alan Tanjusay said that this will not help especially on poor workers who were given the minimum wage and will simply cause a widespread discontent from them.

A report from ABS-CBN News said that the hike is way less than  ₱334 per day that the labor group asked for.

Tanjusay further professed that the government and businesses are conspiring, thus, making workers sacrificial lambs again.

He further called on the government to disband the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board which is composed of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE); National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA); Department of Trade and Industry (DTI); and representatives from worker and employer sectors.

As per the report, Tanjusay said that the wage board is irrelevant and the government must give the power to the workers to make sure that they can support their families. Otherwise, the wage hike is simply “plucked from the air” without computation or formula from DOLE.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo, on the other hand, said that the hike can still be changed depending on the economic conditions.
