USGS Says Earthquake Jolted Island Nation of Vanuatu

EARTHQUAKE – The US Geological Survey (USGS) expressed that a quake recently jolted the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, August 22.

The island nation of Vanuatu sits on the “Pacific Ring of Fire”. Based on a recent report on Inquirer, US Geological Survey (USGS) said that it was jolted by an earthquake. The said quake reportedly has a magnitude of 6.5.

The quake has jolted Vanuatu at a depth of 30 kilometers and its epicenter is located off the northern tip of the Ambrym Island. According to the report, the country holds around 280,000 people scattered over 65 islands.

Fortunately, there was no tsunami risk according to Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

According to the report, Vanuatu Disaster Management Office told AFP that it was not informed about any damage caused by the earthquake.

Eddie Leask of Geoscience Australia told AFP that they get a lot of five and six-magnitude quakes jolting Vanuatu. He stressed that they are expecting both smaller and bigger aftershocks.
