Petition Asks Supreme Court To Issue Order To Stop Boracay Closure

The Supreme Court (SC) has been asked to issue a restraining order against the closure of the popular Boracay Island.

The National Union of Peoples´Lawyers or NUPL, petitioners Mark Anthony Zaal and Thiting Jacosalem, both workers and residents of Boracay asked SC to issue a status quo ante to restore all parties to circumstances before the island closure as an alternative.

The petition was stating that the closure order does only violate their constitutional rights but also the rights of people living and working on the island.

President Rodrigo Duterte, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, and DILG Officer-in-Charge Eduardo Año were impleaded as the respondents in the petition.

The Boracay Island will be closed to the public starting Thursday (April 26, 2018) for rehabilitation and restoration, which will last for six months.

The closure will directly affect about 36, 000 workers engaged in tourism-related jobs.
