Residents, Shop Owners In Boracay Express Disappointment On Its Impending Closure

The residents and show owners in the Boracay Island have expressed their sentiments and disappointment on its impending closure.

Over the past few weeks, Boracay Island has been the headlines of both local and international news outlets after Malacañang Palace announced the total closure of the top tourist destination for six months.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said that the country’s top tourist spot will be temporarily closed for six months to allow the government to rehabilitate and restore the island.

Impending Closure

Recently, a Facebook user named Jason Magbanua has uploaded a video footage showing how Boracay residents and shop owners have expressed their reactions regarding the impending closure of the island.

In the video, it can be seen how the affected residents and shop owners were pleading President Duterte to reconsider the decision because thousands of people will lose their livelihood.

Impending Closure

The residents explained that thousands of people will starve after losing their main source of income in the island.

Here’s the full story:

“If ever there was a time that I’ll ask you guys to watch something I made and then share it in social media if it connects with you, NOW is that time.
___

FACT.
The stakeholders of Boracay have been asking for government support for a decade now, name the agency and they’ve approached it, DENR, DOT, TIEZA etc. Little attention and help was given, until now. So it’s complete bull(–foul word(s) removed–) to harbor the notion that the locals have done nothing and have only ravaged and pillaged.

FACT.
Thousands upon thousands of real people will be affected by a complete closure of the island. Real, breathing humans, not statistics. We are talking about kids, mothers, fathers, entire families – not an “insignificant GDP drop.”

FACT.
There are more realistic solutions in solving the problems of Boracay. Solutions that won’t completely disenfranchise the people inhabiting the island, the greatest, most important stakeholders of them all.”

Social media users have also expressed their reactions regarding the video:

Agua Regine Odi: hindi hahantong sa ganito ang lahat kung umpisa pa lng naingatan na
wala eh… walang disiplina..
pasalamat nga kayo 6 months lng…
pag pinatuloy yan baka maging forever..”

Elesterio Eric: “Little sacrifice mga kapatid!!!!! May time pa para macorrect mga pagkakamali.GOD bless Boracay!”

Stacey Ababa: “You took advantage of the island. You made billions already because of the island. 6 months only is what they need. Give boracay a rest. The island deserves it.”
