Phivolcs Says Possible Stronger Quakes Might Strike Negros Oriental Due To Series Of Tremors
State geologists warned of possible stronger quakes that might strike Negros Oriental after experiencing series of tremors.
Science research assistant Tom Simborio of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that the potentially active fault might produce stronger quakes in Negros Oriental.
The volcanology agency is monitoring the active fault in Negros Oriental after series of minor earthquakes shook the area.
Simborio said that the tremors in the previous week signify a possible movement of the unidentified fault. He also urged the public to remain calm and prepare for any irregularities.
“Communities concerned must prepare accordingly and avoid panicking, Knowing how to duck, cover, and hold, as well as assembling emergency kits, are among earthquake preparations people must do,” Simborio said quoted by PTV News.
Phivolcs data also shows the tremors detected last week in Negros Oriental:
Thursday (February 1)
5:46 pm – Magnitude 3.1 quake was felt 10 kilometers southwest of Valencia located in Negros Oriental’s south-lying third district.
Intensity 3 was felt in Bacong and Valencia towns, while intensity 2 was felt in Dumaguete City and Dauin town.
8:47 pm – Magnitude 2.3 earthquake occurred 17 km southwest of Valencia.
Friday (February 2)
Magnitude 2.3 earthquake was located southwest of Valencia at 1:10 a.m., 2:27 a.m., and 4:27 a.m.
2:36 am – Magnitude 1.8 earthquake was felt four km southwest of Zamboaguita town, also in Negros Oriental’s third district, the province’s southern portion.
5:19 am – Magnitude 2.7 quake occurred about 15 km southwest of Valencia.
Saturday (February 3)
6:21 am – Magnitude 4.7 quake struck 10 km northwest of Zamboanguita’s neighboring town Dauin.
Phivolcs also mentioned numerous earthquakes felt in Negros Oriental last week, which might possibly cause stronger earthquakes in the next few days or weeks.
