Most Filipino Parents Distrust Gov’t Deworming Program Due To Dengvaxia Controversy

Some of the Filipino parents distrust the government’s deworming program in Western Mindanao because of the Dengvaxia health scare.

On Tuesday (January 30, 2018), the Department of Health (DOH) in Zamboanga Peninsula said that the deworming program of the government has been affected by the Dengvaxia controversy.

DOH assistant regional director Dr. Joshua Brillantes said that the numbers of public school students allowed to participate in another mass drug administration have reduced.

“As anticipated, it would affect the other good programs we have. It was sad to note Filipinos failed to appreciate other programs of the DOH such as this deworming that was proven to be safe,” Brillantes said quoted by Philstar.

The parasitic worms could affect the health of the children that could also affect their studies, according to Brillantes.

Dr. Sitti Nurusamsi Amilasan, head of the infectious disease cluster of DOH-9 said that they reached only 46 percent of their target children far from their 85 percent goal.

Most parents refused to allow their children to receive the deworming pills fearing that their children might suffer the same fate with Dengvaxia victims.
