Criminal Charges Against Aquino Is Weak, Justice Secretary Aguirre Says
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre has admitted that the criminal charges against former President Benigno Aquino III were weak.
On Wednesday (July 19, 2017), Aguirre admitted that the cases filed against Aquino regarding the massacre of 44 Special Action Force (SAF) police commandos in Mamasapano, Maguindanao is weak, which could only carry out less than six years imprisonment.
Recently, Aquino was indicted as it was ordered by the Office of the Ombudsman for allegedly violating the usurpation of authority by allowing his friend, and suspended PNP chief Alan Purisima to be a part of the failed operation. He was also indicted for violation of anti-graft law.
Aquino has been found working with Getulio Napeñas and Alan Purisima, according to Ombudsman. The Ombudsman also ruled that corresponding charges will be filed against the accused.
The Ombudsman has dismissed Purisima from the service in a separate graft case involving the delivery system of PNP for the firearm licenses renewal.
Unfortunately, the antigraft body invalidated the complaint about reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides filed by the families of the 44 SAF soldiers who died in action.
Aguirre said that Purisima and Aquino should be held responsible for the death of the SAF soldiers and Napeñas just only obeyed their orders. Napeñas believed that the Ombudsman will recommend the indictment of the accused, but will exempt him for his innocence.
“I just heard from a DOJ Undersecretary that the case was really weak,” said by Aguirre quoted by Inquirer.
The ex-SAF head also insisted that the former President Aquino should explain why he did not order an immediate military support for the soldiers who are engaged in battle with the extremists.
