Centuries-Old Trees Were Cut In Palawan After Rejection Of Lopez’s Appointment

Several trees were reportedly cut in Palawan.

PALAWAN – Days after the appointment of former Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Gina Lopez was rejected, several trees were reportedly cut in Palawan.

One of the recent controversial topic in the political arena is the rejection of Lopez as the environment secretary. Many people were really saddened by the decision of the panel of Commission on Appointments (CA).

Based on a recent report in ABS-CBN News, just days after the rejection of Lopez’s appointment, trees were cut in Palawan as confirmed by no other than the Mayor of Brooke’s Point, Mayor Jean Feliciano.

Talking to radio DZMM’s Noli de Castro in a phone interview, the government official said that lots of trees were cut and it even include “centuries-old” trees.

Based on the news report, Mayor Feliciano said that the thousand trees that were cut were grown in Mount Mantalingajan.

According to the Brooke’s Point Mayor, she talked with the Governor and men were sent in the place which led to the arrest of some of those who cut the trees. However, there were still some of them who has not been caught yet.

Mayor Feliciano claimed that she and some authorities were not allowed to enter the area as she went there several times.

According to her, even the police authorities were prohibited from entering the area so she brought with her Marines.

“Iyung mga pulis, takot din nila akong samahan kasi tinatakot nilang kakasuhan,” Mayor Feliciano said based on the report.

According to her, the area is also their watershed and they really felt bad towards the cutting of thousands of trees.

Based on a previous news report, Mayor Feliciano sought the help of the former DENR Secretary Lopez. She plans to file a complaint to the new environment Secretary with regards to the issue.

The cutting of the trees reportedly happened two days after the appointment of Lopez was rejected by CA.
