Just-In: Magnitude 5.4 Quake Shakes Areas In Bicol, Eastern Visayas Today

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 hit areas in Bicol and Eastern Visayas today.

EARTHQUAKE – Some areas in Bicol and Eastern Visayas has been struck by a 5.4 magnitude earthquake today, April 10.

Based on a recent news report in Rappler, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology announced in its bulletin earlier that the earthquake hit at 8:43 in the morning, Monday.

It is stated in the report that the epicenter of the 5.4 magnitude earthquake was located 89 kilometers northeast of Mapanas, Northern Samar, in the Philippine Sea, at a depth of 27 kilometers below the surface.

Intensity I was reported in Palo Leyte and Tacloban City and Intensity II was reported in Juban, Sorsogon, Catarman, and Northern Samar.

Based on the report, the bulletin stated that there are no threats of tsunami and no damage has been caused by the quake. Meanwhile, aftershocks are expected.

Last week, some areas in Luzon were also hit by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake based on a previous news report. It hit parts of Luzon at 3:09 in the afternoon, Saturday, April 8.

According to the report, social media users reported that the quake was felt in Metro Manila, Laguna, Batangas, Zambales, Cavite, and Talaga, Calabarzon.

Reportedly, last month, on the 14th day of March, a quake with a magnitude of 3.6 hit Cotabato City.

The recent quakes that have hit some areas in the country have undeniably alarmed the citizenry. Lots of news reports were sparked by the so-called ‘Big One’ which might hit the Metro Manila and the nearby provinces to it.

According to Phivolcs, the ‘Big One’ might hit anytime due to the irregular movements of the West Valley fault. Two major faults in the Philippines now are being monitored by the Phivolcs.

In case the faults would move, a big part of Luzon might be affected by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
