Finland Leads The World’s Most Literate Country

Finland Won The No.1 Spot In World’s Most Literate Country

Finland  has set a new world record as they become the most literate country in the world.

This is a new world ranking and puts the United States at rank 7.

It was conducted by John W. Miller, president of Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, and his team.

The study analyzes trends in literate behavior and literacy in more than 60 countries.

According to the survey, Nordic countries are among the most literate in the world, while countries located in the Western Hemisphere didn’t do well.

Miller has concentrated his academic work for 40 years in literacy, and produced “America’s Most Literate Cities” survey from 2003 to 2014, collaborating with Central Connecticut’s Center for Public Policy and Social Research.

He said in a statement: “The factors we examined present a complex and nuanced portrait of a nation’s cultural vitality, and what the rankings strongly suggest and world literacy demonstrates is that these kinds of literate behaviors are critical to the success of individuals and nations in the knowledge-based economics that define our global future.”

Those scores were from international students’ tests.

However, this doesn’t really measure of how one country really does over another.

Miller’s team set out to analyze data from 200 countries worldwide.

He also said: “The Pacific Rim countries, Singapore, South Korea, Japan and China, would top the list if test performance were the only measure. Finland would be the only non-Pacific Rim country to rank high. When factor such as library size and accessibility are added in, the Pacific Rim nations drop dramatically.”

He also added, “there is no meaningful correlation between years of compulsory schooling and educational expenditures on the one hand and test scores on the other.”

The result of 2015 PDK-Gallup poll found 64 per cent of Americans believe there is too much standardized testing at their respective schools, but according to Miller, students’ performance on  standardized test may not be the best indication of whether they are educated well or not.
