The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed to the media that a 5.2 magnitude earthquake rattled parts of the Ilocos region on Saturday, March 12, 2016. According to Phivolcs the tremor’s epicenter was located at 40 kilometers northwest of Laoag, Ilocos Norte.
Phivolcs also added that the tectonic quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers at exactly 12 noon and released the following intensities which were felt in the following areas.
Intensity V (strong) – Laoag City and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Burgos, Ilocos Sur
Intensity IV (moderately strong) – Vigan, Ilocos Sur
Intensity III (weak) – Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Pamplona, Cagayan
Based upon Phivolcs news released an Intensity V tremor is “generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors.” The Ilocos Norte earthquake is also characterized by strong rocking felt through buildings; violent swinging of hanging objects; noticeable shaking of trees and parked vehicles; and falling or overturning of light objects.
The Philippine agency in-charge of earthquake, Phivolcs said Saturday’s quake will not cause damage but is expected to produce aftershocks.
