The tough-talking mayor of Davao City, presidential candidate Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will discuss the controversial Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) as he is scheduled to meet with the top officials of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Camp Darapanan, Sultan Kudarat, in Maguindanao on Saturday.
The visit of the 70-year-old Mayor Duterte to the main camp of the rebel group MILF is part of the mayor’s intention to discuss a peaceful solutions to the Mindanao problem and the Moro people’s dream of creating a Bangsamoro territory through the passage of the BBL.
Mayor Duterte, during his visit to Cebu City, slammed the Aquino administration’s failure to come up with a meaningful and long-lasting solution to the Mindanao problem. He also warned that the Mindanao conflict will continue if the government would not be able to “correct the historical wrong committed against the Moro people.”
After the failure of the BBL to pass the Congress, Mayor Duterte vowed to push for federalism as an alternative to the law. He also said that people in Mindanao could not afford to just “kill each other,” instead he asked his brothers and sisters in Mindanao to wait for a while and wait for the right time, for he will come up with something that will solve the Mindanao problems.
The controversial mayor said federalism would empower local governments and pave the way for prosperity in Mindanao. He also said a federal form of government would bring peace and order in Mindanao.
