The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) maintains its position to remove Filipino subject in the college curriculum despite the Supreme Court decision to issue a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO)against the CHED Memorandum 20 which drops subjects from the general education curriculum in college.
In an exclusive interview with dzMM, CHED Executive Director Julito Vitriolo clarified that the said memo does not totally remove the Filipino subject but transfers it to the Senior High School curriculum under the K-12 Program of the Department of Education (DepEd).
CHED also stated that the agency will file its comment on the TRO issued by the Supreme Court within 10 days. The agency also assured the general public that they respect the country’s high court decision following the petition of a group of Filipino professors headed by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera against the CHED’s memo of dropping the Filipino subject.
The CHED Executive Director Julito Vitriolo also clarified that the dropping of Filipino subject directive will be implemented by the year 2018 because in the 2016 and 2017 school year, there will be no first and second year students in college.
Officials of CHED also denied the issue that around 78,000 educators will lose their jobs due to the new education curriculum, the K-13 Program of the Department of Education (DepEd).
