LPA “Agaton” Unlikely to Become a Storm – PAGASA (Jan. 11, 2014)

The low pressure area (LPA) off General Santos City has a low chance of intensifying into a tropical depression, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Saturday morning.

Agaton LPA

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that the current Low Pressure Area (LPA) was last spotted at 680 kilometers east of General Santos City and is not expected to develop into a strong storm because of the northeast monsoon (amihan).

In an interview with ANC, PAGASA forecaster Glaiza Escullar confirmed that the LPA will unlikely to become a storm, but in the case that the LPA will intensify, it will be locally named as “Agaton,” the first tropical cyclone in the Philippines this year.

The Low Pressure Area will continue to bring moderate to heavy rains over the regions of CARAGA and Davao, residents are advised to be on alert for flashfloods and landslides according to PAGASA.

In the Visayas and the rest of the Mindanao ares will also experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rains. In the areas of Luzon, it will be affected by northeast monsoon.

The Cagayan Valley and Aurora will have light rains, while Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have isolated rains or thunderstorms. The Northeast monsoon will continue to bring cold weather to Metro Manila until the end of February.
