Hermit crabs (Coenobita clypeatus) known as “umang” in the Philippines is making its way as pets in Filipino homes.  It belongs to the same group of crustaceans like crabs and shrimps.

Contrast to their relatives, hermits has a fragile outer shell. Their exoskeleton or outer shell can’t protect their soft bodies so they often look for inhabit snail shells to defend their body.

In an interview with the morning show ‘Umagang kay Ganda’, “Habang nagmo-molt (outgrowing of skin) at lumalaki siya, nagiging masikip sa loob. Ayaw na niya sa ‘bahay’ na ito at lilipat siya kusa,” explained Howard Go of Lucky Hermits,a pet store with outlets in SM Megamall, SM North Edsa, and Robinsons Ermita.

Providing shell for hermit crabs is a fun way for their owners too.  They can choose from natural shells or hand painted shells that can vary from cartoon characters or other colorful designs. The shop uses non-toxic paint and is very safe to use for painting the shell of “umang”.

It’s a good pet at home because it doesn’t need much. They can eat fruits, vegetables, cereals or you can buy food at particular hermit shop.

One important thing is the owner should also provide a small pond in its habitat to give it moist and water to drink.
