Tahrir Square: Silent Witness of Egyptian Protest

Tahrir Square or Midan Square in Arabic is the major meeting place for the Egyptian protesters. It is the site of the bloody clashes between the Anti-government supporters and the pro-Mubarak supporters. Tahrir Square is translated in English as Liberation Square.

Tahrir Square is the silent witness of major demonstrations and numerous protests for the past years. It is one of the primary locations in Cairo, Egypt. For the past days this square have been the permanent meeting place for supporters. Latest developments have reported that Tahrir Square was now become the venue of clashes between pro-Mubarak supporters and anti-government protesters.

Khedive Ismael, the 19th century ruler have commissioned the creation of Tahrir Square. It was remembered as the place where people gathered and gained independence from British rule.  According to the latest reports there were at least 8 fatalities anda hundreds wounded  in and outside of Tahrir Square.

On Wednesday, pro-government protesters tried to overthrow and dispersed the growing number of protesters who are gathering at Tahrir Square but they could not do it without resistance. It was a signed of victory of the protesters. Clashes between the two parties have grown tremendously. They used stone and petrol bombs to scared the protesters but the courage of the protesters proved to be victorious.

Tahrir Square now once again made news throughout the world, photos of Tahrir Square is nowadays a hot commodity. This historic place will surely be a part of Egyptian history for the next generation to come. It is indeed a  silent witness for the Egyptian people to remember if Mubarak someday will decide to resign from office.
