6 Construction Workers From Surigao del Sur Scammed by Foreman in Cebu City

Six construction workers from Surigao del Sur were allegedly scammed by their foreman in Cebu City.

The construction industry plays a crucial role in the development of the country, and construction workers are essential to the success of the industry. It is important for employers and foremen to treat these workers with respect and dignity, provide them with fair compensation, and ensure that they are protected from exploitation and abuse.

Recently, a group of construction workers from Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur recently fell victim to a scam perpetrated by their own foreman while working on a construction site in Cebu City.

The workers were brought to Cebu by a neighbor to work in construction, hoping to earn a decent living to support their families back home. The foreman, who is also from Surigao, allegedly collected the salaries from their employer but failed to distribute the funds to the workers.

On Tuesday (March 7, 2023), DSWS Operations Division head Portia Basmayor said that officials from Barangay Cogon-Ramos, Cebu City sought help to assist the poor workers to return to their hometown.

The workers were provided with financial assistance through the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (DSWS AICS) program, which provided them with P3,000 each to help them return home to Surigao.

The construction workers already left for Surigao on Wednesday (March 8, 2023), according to Basmayor.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of construction workers, particularly those who are brought to a new location to work, as they often rely on their employers and foremen to provide them with fair compensation for their work.
