World Health Issues Guidelines as Monkeypox Becomes Global Health Emergency
WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION – The WHO declared monkeypox a global health emergency amid the increasing cases in some countries.
More than two (2) years ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic. There was a rapid spread of the virus among countries and millions of lives were lost due to the said disease. For several months, strict restrictions were implemented to the point of border closures to prevent the spread of the virus.
The pandemic cost millions of lives across the globe, closed businesses and dragged the economy of several countries down, and changed the way people live. The restrictions implemented to fight the spread of the virus urged the people to live under a “new normal”.
After more than a year and most countries have vaccinated a huge part of their population against COVID-19, the daily recorded cases and deaths dropped. However, recently, the easing of restrictions raised another possibility of a spike in the cases in some nations – while a new global health emergency was declared.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a global health emergency, the highest alarm for emerging infectious diseases. The international body released temporary recommendations to address the health problem.
The WHO’s guidelines include the raising of public awareness regarding how monkeypox is transmitted, the activation of mechanisms for readiness and response, and intensifying detection capacity, epidemiology, and surveillance.
Monkeypox first alarmed the WHO when it was recorded in countries where the disease is not endemic. Unlike COVID-19, this disease has been present in several nations including those in West and Central Africa.
Among the countries that confirmed cases of monkeypox are the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Canada, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Australia, Netherlands, United States, Austria, Denmark, France, Israel, Sweden, and Switzerland.
