Senator Gatchalian Warns Government Agencies About New Phishing Scam

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Sherwin Gatchalian alerted the government agencies regarding the emergence of the new phishing scam.

On Monday (June 28, 2021), Senator Gatchalian warned the government agencies regarding the new mobile and online shopping scams. The lawmaker made the announcement as various modus rapidly spreads over the past few years.

Gatchalian called to strengthen the campaign against deceptive and sham transactions because the scammers became innovative and started to use modern technology to scam their target victims.

“Scammers, owing to the technological advances that are evolving at a fast pace these past few years, have become more innovative in carrying out their nefarious activities,” Gatchalian said.

The lawmaker received reports regarding the short message service (SMS) phishing and immediately informed the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the National Privacy Commission (NPC).

The report claims that scammers are using the name of a popular online shopping website used in a text message to scam victims. One victim inquired to the shopping website regarding the message and discovered that it was scam.

The scammers would send SMS to random people and would ask for their personal details. He advised the public not to give any information to avoid falling into those schemes.
