Grace Poe Appeals to Gov’t To Allow Backriding for Family Members
GRACE POE – Senator Grace Poe, chairperson of Senate Committee on Public Services, appealed to the government to allow back-riding for relatives in motorcycles.
Previously, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that they are now banning backriding in motorcycles to contain the spread of COVID-19. They said it is part of the government’s guidelines for social distancing policy.
They also limit the number of passengers in public vehicles. The “Bawal Angkas” law elicited mixed reactions from netizens and motorists.
In a previous article, a lady netizen expressed her disappointment towards the “unfair” implementation of the “Bawal Angkas” policy. She uploaded a photo of a father and son who were detained for violating the policy. She’s disappointed why some officials failed to follow the policy. She also uploaded photos of cops with back riders.
On Tuesday, June 23, Senator Grace Poe urged the government to allow back riding of relatives in motorcycles. Based on a report from Manila Bulletin, the chairperson of the Senate committee on public service said it will help lessen the number of commuters who are struggling with lack of transportation.
“Ang pag-angkas sa motorsiklo ay sariling paraan ng ating mga kababayan para makarating sa trabaho at makapaghanapbuhay para sa kanilang pamilya. Malaking kabwasan na ito sa mga stranded na pasahero na araw-araw ay hirap makasakay,” she said.
According to the report, Senator Grace Poe said the back rider should just carry a valid ID or document that proves he’s related to the driver. Filipinos have been appealing for compassion as they walk for kilometers just to reach work.
She said it would be “safer for a spouse to ride with her partner than to walk, take a tricycle or other public transportation, which could expose her to infection.”
“Nakakapanlumo na makita ang magkapamilya na sa pagpasok sa trabaho, ‘yung isa ay nasa motorsiklo at ‘yong isa ay naglalakad dahil bawal ang angkas,” she added.
