Voter Registration Suspension Extended, COMELEC Announces

The COMELEC announces extension of voter registration suspension due to extended ECQ.

VOTER REGISTRATION SUSPENSION – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced extension of voter registration suspension, Saturday.

The government on Friday has declared second extension of enhanced community quarantine in Luzon and other parts of the country which are at high risk of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). While those areas which have moderate or low risk will be put under general community quarantine.

Thus, the Commission on Elections (Comelec), on Saturday, April 25, also announced the extension of suspension of voter registration. This is in light with the extended community quarantine which will last until the 15th of May.

Comelec Executive Director Bartolome Sinocruz Jr. said, “The conduct of voter registration is not yet advisable since there will be restrictions on the movement of people and on certain activities.”

The extension of suspension is in effect nationwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be up until June 30, 2020. This period, according to the report of GMA, will “give the Commission time to put in place anti-COVID-19 measures in relation to the conduct of the registration of voters once it resumes”.

Meanwhile, based on April 24 coronavirus update in the country from the Department of Health (DOH), the total number of confirmed cases has now reached 7,192. This comes along with the total number of deaths at 477 and 762 recoveries.

Luzon and some parts of Visayas and Mindana are put under enhanced community quarantine and some selected areas are ordered to impose general community quarantine by the President, this is a new and a notch lower that ECQ approach to contain the spread of coronavirus.
