Phivolcs Downgrades Taal Volcano’s Alert Status to Level 1 (March 19)

Taal Volcano’s Alert Status Downgraded to Level 1, Phivolcs Says

TAAL VOLCANO – The state volcanology agency Phivolcs has downgraded Taal Volcano’s alert status from level 2 to alert level 1.

On Thursday (March 19, 2020), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported the latest updates about Taal Volcano. The agency has lowered Taal’s status from alert level 2 to level 1 due to low-level activity.

Phivolcs reported that Taal Volcano Network recorded a decrease in the daily average of volcanic earthquakes over the past few weeks. The volcanic activities have also declined and surface activity has already weakened.

The volcano is emitting less amount of Sulfur dioxide or SO2 flux and surface activity has abated to weak emission of 50-100-meter tall steam-laden plumes.

The seismology agency downgraded Taal’s status to alert level 1 (abnormal) but the people should not interpret it that the threat of an eruption has disappeared. The alert status may be raised back to level 2 if it shows increased signs of unrest.

DOST-PHIVOLCS has reminded the public that Taal could still generate sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas although it was placed under alert level 1.
