STRONGEST EARTHQUAKE – Here is the strongest earthquake and the most devastating tsunami in the Philippine history.

Over the past few days, the powerful earthquake that struck Cotabato and parts of Mindanao has been one of the most trending topics on the social media. The magnitude 6.6 earthquake damaged several buildings and establishments.

On Thursday (October 31, 2019), a magnitude 6.5 earthquake also struck Tulunan, Cotabato. The quake has been located at 07.00N, 125.09E – 033 km N 61° E of Tulunan with a depth of two kilometers.

A hotel in Kidapawan City even collapsed after the disastrous earthquake struck the area. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also arrived to determine if there were people trapped inside the building.

Many Filipino people are also scared of the so-called “Big One Earthquake” with a magnitude of 7.2. The strong tremor is expected to kill and injure thousands of people along the West Valley Fault.

However, did you know that the strongest earthquake to have hit the Philippines happened in Mindanao? The most affected areas is Central Mindanao particularly in Cotabato City.

On August 17, 1976, Moro Gulf, Mindanao island has been struck by a magnitude 8.0 earthquake. The quake’s epicenter is located near the town of Lebak in Sultan Kudarat but also rocked the cities along Mindanao and even reached Visayas.

Five minutes after the quake, waves as high as 9 meters hits Moro Gulf wherein the death toll was estimated around 8,000.
