President Duterte Pays Last Respect to Ex-Speaker Prospero Nograles
PROSPERO NOGRALES – Philippine President Duterte visited the wake of the former House Speaker Prospero Nograles.
House Speaker Prospero Nograles died at the age of 71 due to “respiratory failure, secondary pneumonia on May 7.
In a previous article, his son Karlo Nograles said that his father passed away surrounded by his family.
Prospero Nograles is the first person from Mindanao to be elected as House of Representatives speaker. He served the House of Representatives for 15 years.
Before he became the House speaker, he represented the 1st district of Davao City.
Based on a report from ABS-CBN, after Nograles’s term ended in 2010, he competed against President Duterte’s daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio for the mayoralty position but lost.
In 2015, Duterte and the late House speaker mended ties. Nograles’ family then supported Duterte’s presidential bid.
According to the report, President Duterte then appointed Karlo Nograles as Davao City 1st District Representative.
The president said he was “deeply saddened” by the death of a good friend.
“His legacy as a leader who used his voice to speak on behalf of the Filipino people will continue to inspire other politicians and leaders who are committed to serving their countrymen,” said Duterte.
Based on the report, he said those words while visiting the wake of Prospero Nograles at the Heritage Park in Fort Bonifacio on May 5.
The Malacañang palace released a statement saying the former House speaker placed second on the 1971 bar exam. During the regime of Ferdinand Marcos, he represented the victim of human rights violation. Then he supported the campaign of the former President Cory Aquino.
