Boracay Mayor Cawaling Is Suspended Due To Alleged Neglect Of Duty On The Island
BORACAY MAYOR – The Office of the Ombudsman has suspended Malay Mayor Ciceron Cawaling for the alleged neglect of duty that led to the environmental crisis of Boracay.
Boracay is under the jurisdiction of Malay Aklan and one of the famous tourist’s destinations not just in the Philippines but in the whole world.
Based on the report from Philstar, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) stated that the Office of the Ombudsman suspended the Boracay Mayor.
He allegedly neglected his duty that led to the environmental crisis of Boracay Island.
The island was shut down for six months for rehabilitation and it reopened today.
The Office of the Ombudsman filed a six-month preventive suspension to Malay Mayor Ciceron Cawaling.
The DILG Undersecretary Epimaci Densing III confirmed his suspension and DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said they will also serve suspension against Cawaling.
The Boracay Mayor’s suspension was made effective last October 25, 2018.
According to the report, Densing filed a criminal and administrative case against the Malay Mayor and his other 16 officials.
They allegedly allowed establishments to operate despite the law that is imposed on the island.
The Malay officials are being charged for approving or granting license permits to any person not qualified or not legally entitled to such license. Their suspension came a day before Boracay reopened after it’s months of regeneration.
Based on the report, the names of the 115 hotels that could operate on the island was released by the Department of Tourism.
The DOT implemented the “no compliance, no opening” policy to those establishments in Boracay.
The Vice Mayor of Malay, Abram Sualog, is currently the acting mayor.
