President Duterte Threatens To Close ‘Cesspool’ Boracay
President Rodrigo Duterte wanted to close the ‘Cesspool’ Boracay due to the garbage and environment problem in the popular tourist spot.
On Friday (February 09, 2018), Mr. Duterte has threatened the Cesspool in Boracay because of the garbage problem, which becomes one of the environmental and major health concern in the island.
The president cited the time he personally witnessed the garbage when he visited Boracay Island a few years ago.
“During days when I was there, the garbage was just 20 meters away from the beach. At a distance you see a cotton balls of Boracay is a white sand. But you go into the water, it’s smelly. Smell of what? S***,” Duterte said quoted by Philstar.
Duterte said that the garbage problem in Boracay was destroying the country’s environment.
Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu has been ordered by President Duterte to clean the area within six months.
The country’s leader said that the tourists might get disappointed because of the environmental problem in Boracay.
Boracay Island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines because of its white and powdery sand and vibrant nightlife.
The country’s top tourist’s spot has also earned numerous recognition worldwide for being a winter escape destination.
