Panic erupted after gunshots were heard inside the Senate, while Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano expressed that he won’t leave Sen. Bato Dela Rosa.
Gunshots were allegedly heard at the Senate on Wednesday evening, May 13, 2026, amid rising tensions following developments surrounding the arrest of Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa. Several media outlets reported the supposed gunshots while authorities, members of the press, and supporters were gathered around the area.
Panic erupted among the people amid an ongoing lockdown in the upper chamber where Dela Rosa is under protective custody.
Authorities have yet to confirm the source of the gunshots.
In a Facebook live, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano aired his statement and expressed that they are refusing to leave Senator Bato amid the chaos.
“I just want everyone to know, itong grupo na nandito we are not going to leave each other, we are not going to leave Senator Bato. May agreement na. We are still looking at the Supreme Court decision. His legal remedies have not been exhausted. Sabi ng Supreme Court, binigyan ng 3 days to comment. So, we are relying on the law, relying on the Constitution, we are relying on the word of the NBI na hindi papasukin ang Senate na walang coordination,” he said.
Sen. Pia Cayetano and Sen. Loren Legarda are in the room with him.
In Cayetano’s livestream, he also quipped, “We don’t know what’s happening, everyone is locked in their rooms now, we cannot go out. We cannot secure our other staff. This is the Senate of the Philippines… Why are we under attack here?”
At around 7:30 PM, members of the Senate sergeant-at-arms and the Philippine Navy were seen entering and inspecting a room on the second floor.
According to a report by GMA News, the inspection took place amid heightened tension at the Senate complex. The tension escalated after the Supreme Court (SC) did not grant the temporary restraining order (TRO) sought by Dela Rosa.
As of posting time, the lights at the Senate building in Pasay City had reportedly been shut off amid the continuing tension.
The situation in the Senate remains developing.
