Sara Duterte Says She ‘Didn’t Want To Become President’ amid Impeachment Proceedings

SARA DUTERTE – The Vice President claimed that everyone knows that she did not want to become president amid the impeachment proceedings.

The congressmen and congresswomen in the House of Representatives are expected to vote on the impeachment of Vice Pres. Duterte after the House Justice Committee found probable cause to impeach the Vice President. It was a unanimous decision.

Out of the four impeachment raps filed, two complaints against Duterte were found sufficient in form, substance. and grounds by the Justice panel. Here are some of the grounds raised against the Vice President:

  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes in amassing and converting the amount over PHP 500 million confidential funds (CF) allocated to the Office of the Vice President from 2022 to 2023
  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes in amassing and converting the amount of not less than PHP 112.5 million of confidential funds allocated to the Department of Education (DepEd) for the year 2023
  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust by corrupting and bribing officials of the DepEd
  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes in contracting to murder or assassinate the president, the first lady, and the former speaker of the House
  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust in amassing unexplained wealth and failing to disclose all her properties and interests in properties in her SALN
  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust in committing acts of  political destabilization and the high crimes of sedition and insurrection

The House Justice panel needs at least 106 votes to impeach Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. Two (2) House leaders recently expressed their confidence that the number has already reached past the target.

From claims of 180 congressmen and congresswomen voting for the impeachment of Duterte, it has reached over 200 which Bicol Saro Partylist Representative Terry Ridon said is heading to a “super majority”. He stressed that it is significant.

Amid the impeachment moves against her, Vice Pres. Duterte flew to The Hague, Netherlands to visit former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte. According to her, she did not mention about her impeachment complaints to the President as they only tell him good news.

Based on a report on Inquirer, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte also claimed that everyone supposedly knows that she did not intend to become president of the country. Her remarks came after she previously announced her presidential bid in 2028.

“When it comes to politics, how do I say this? You all know that I did not want to become president. That’s why I did not run for president in 2022, especially vice president, because I really intended to run for mayor in 2022,” Duterte expressed.

Furthermore, based on the report, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte claimed that she is not fixed with the position as you can really help if you want to even without a position in the government.

Amid the possibility that the Vice President’s impeachment will reach the Senate, known Duterte ally Senator Robin Padilla claimed that he will be fair if the Senate holds the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte.
