Rowena Guanzon Announces Senate Bid for 2028

Former Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon Sets Sights on the Senate in 2028

ROWENA GUANZON – Known for her outspoken stance on national issues, Rowena Guanzon is now preparing for a bigger political battle in the 2028 Senate race.

Former Rowena Guanzon has announced that she plans to run for senator in the 2028 national elections, signaling her intention to return to public service and represent the interests of the Visayas on a national stage.

Guanzon announced the Cebu Alliance for Duterte 2028 gathering held on Friday, March 13. In her speech before supporters, the former Commission on Elections commissioner emphasized her commitment to championing the concerns of Visayan communities, particularly those who feel underrepresented in the Senate.

“I will fight for the Visayans,” she said. “Forty years na walang Sebwanong senador. We will reclaim our seat in the Senate.”

Her statement highlights a long-standing sentiment among some Cebuano leaders and residents who believe the region deserves stronger representation in the upper chamber of Congress. Guanzon’s declaration drew applause from attendees, many of whom expressed support for her potential candidacy in the upcoming elections.

Before considering a Senate run, Guanzon was also involved in the party-list system during the 2022 elections. She was proclaimed as the first nominee of the Komunidad ng Pamilya, Pasyente at Persons with Disabilities or P3PWD Party-list for the 19th Congress.

However, the proclamation was later nullified by the Supreme Court of the Philippines. The high court ruled that Guanzon’s substitution as nominee happened only after the 2022 elections had already been conducted, making the change invalid under election rules.

Despite the legal setback, the party-list had already secured enough votes during the polls to earn representation in Congress. In the 2022 elections, the P3PWD party-list received a total of 391,174 votes, equivalent to 1.0629 percent of the total votes cast in the party-list race. This result entitled the group to one seat in the House of Representatives.

Guanzon has long been known for her outspoken views on political and social issues, often drawing both praise and criticism for her strong statements on governance and accountability.

With her early announcement for the 2028 elections, Guanzon is positioning herself as a potential voice for Visayans in the Senate. As the next national elections approach, her declaration may signal the start of broader political efforts aimed at bringing stronger regional representation to the country’s legislative body.
